Responsibilities

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Patient Consultation & Preoperative Responsibilities

  • Leads patient consultations, explaining advanced IONM procedures to patients and families.
  • Conducts comprehensive preoperative assessments and communicates findings to the supervising physician.

 

Advanced Equipment Setup & Troubleshooting

  • Independently sets up, calibrates, and optimizes complex neuromonitoring equipment for advanced cases.
  • Identifies and resolves technical or physiological issues during surgery with minimal supervision.
  • Ensures equipment performance, maintains high standards for calibration, and reports complex technical concerns.

 

Intraoperative Neuromonitoring

  • Performs and interprets advanced neuromonitoring modalities (SSEP, MEP, BAER, EEG, EMG, Train of Four).
  • Provides immediate, expert-level communication to surgeons and anesthesiologists during critical surgical phases.
  • Demonstrates deep knowledge of how anesthesia, pharmacology, and patient comorbidities impact monitoring outcomes.
  • Leads advanced and high-risk surgical cases requiring elevated technical skill and independent decision-making.

 

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepares comprehensive intraoperative documentation, including interpretation of advanced cases.
  • Ensures accuracy and completeness in post-operative reports, billing forms, and technical logs.
  • Provides technical narratives that support neurologists and supervising physicians in final interpretation.

 

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Trains and mentors Associate, Neurodiagnostic, and IONM Technologists.
  • Provides case debriefs, quality assurance feedback, and supports performance improvement initiatives.
  • Participates in continuing education, advanced certification activities, and leads internal knowledge-sharing sessions.

 

Additional Duties

  • Supports departmental initiatives such as clinical audits, CEU program development, and strategic projects.
  • May assist in policy development, business growth initiatives, and research in advanced neuromonitoring.
  • Stays current with evolving industry standards, advanced modalities, and emerging technologies.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Must have active ABRET CNIM certification.
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree or higher required (i.e., Master’s, PhD, MD). A science related degree is preferred.
  • Must have current AHA CPR certification.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.

 

Required Skills and Capabilities

  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, neuroanatomy, as well as an understanding of surgical procedures and anesthesia protocols and how they pertain to IONM. Knowledge of electrophysiological equipment used in performing tests on patients.
  • Ability to analyze various electronic and neurophysiologic waveforms.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with surgical team members, patients, visitors, and other hospital employees.
  • Ability to utilize multiple technology platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to stand, turn, and stoop among several types of equipment in an operating room suite.
  • Ability to apply different types of electrodes to a patient with precision and speed in preparation of monitoring a surgical procedure.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while concentrating on monitoring computer screen images during a surgical procedure.
  • Ability to work on call and work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance.

 

 

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • The use of protective clothing such as surgical clothing, gloves, glasses, and masks (PPE).
  • Work requires lifting supplies, pushing, or carrying bulky pieces of equipment.
  • Occasional/frequent travel by motor vehicle and/or air transportation to healthcare facilities located in both urban and rural areas.
  • Variable work schedules that may change from week to week, depending on case load and surgeon’s availability, creating situations that may require minimal notice to be available for a case.
  • Will require cell phone availability for scheduled “on-call time” during weekends to cover add-on, elective, or emergency cases.
  • Usually working independently of other Technologists.
  • Physical demands would include lifting and transporting 40-45lbs of monitoring equipment to each facility utilizing proper lifting techniques.
