The Surgical Assist / CSFA / RNFA is responsible for performing surgical first assist duties during surgery. This individual should possess a high degree of professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, to assist the surgeon and facility staff in achieving successful surgical outcomes.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Function as surgical assistant in surgical procedures
  • Assist in positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient during the surgical procedure
  • Anticipate and provide retraction to expose the operative field for the surgeon
  • Maintain a clean surgical field for the surgeon by managing hemostasis, both permanent and temporary
  • Assist with foley insertion/catheterization, approximating tissues, and knot tying
  • Aid in the transfer of the surgical patient from cart to the O.R. table and vice versa
  • Assist with transporting surgical patients to the O.R. suite pre-operatively and to the PACU/ICU postoperatively
  • Implement aseptic technique
  • Cross train in various specialties
  • Assist with administrative responsibilities
  • Support and adhere to policies, practice guidelines, and regulations of the department of surgery and of the hospital
  • Provide health care services to patients under the direction and responsibility of a physician
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

 

  • Must possess current Surgical Assistant certification and be nationally certified by The American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA), The National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA), or The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required
  • Current BLS or ACLS Certification preferred
  • 1-3 years’ experience as a surgical assistant

 

Skills/Specialized Knowledge

 

  • Must have excellent computer skills specifically MS Office, Diagnostic imaging systems, and EMR
  • Background in Neuro or Spinal experience

 

 

Other Requirements

 

  • Must maintain professional appearance.
  • Ability to be at work on a regular and consistent basis

 

Physical and Mental Demands

 

This position will spend long hours in the OR and frequent lifting, standing, and squatting.  The position will also entail frequent lifting of patients for pre-op and post-op positing. This position will also entail lifting of materials 20+ pounds in addition to reaching, stooping, standing, walking, and kneeling. This position requires the ability to talk, hear, compare, compute, compile, copy, analyze, coordinate, synthesize, negotiate and communicate. Work Environment

 

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • The use of protective clothing such as surgical clothing, gloves, glasses, and masks (PPE).
  • Occasional/frequent travel by motor vehicle and/or air transportation to healthcare facilities located in both urban and rural areas.
  • Variable work schedules that may change from week to week, depending on case load, surgeon’s availability, creating situations that may require minimal notice to be available for a case.
